2020 NFL mock draft: Two teams trade up for franchise quarterbacks
By Evan Bachman
The Giants are probably the hardest team to predict for in the entire draft. I have seen many people mocking them with offensive tackles, but Isaiah Simmons is a better prospect than any of the offensive tackles and linebacker is a need, so it just makes too much sense for them not to take Simmons. With that being said, it would not surprise me at all, to see them select someone that nobody expects as they did with Daniel Jones at six last year.
The New York Giants aren’t as weak at linebacker as they are at other positions like cornerback, but David Mayo is a free agent and Alec Ogletree is a borderline starting level player, so it’s still a need.
Simmons was ACC defensive player of the year and the Dick Butkus Award winner this season. He’s recorded 97 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, six passes defended and three interceptions. These numbers show how Simmons can affect the game in so many different ways.
The biggest selling point to his game is his extreme versatility. According to a twitter post from ESPN’s Field Yates, this season he has lined up at safety for 218 snaps, slot corner for 286 snaps, outside linebacker for 160 snaps, inside/middle linebacker for 120 snaps, and perimeter corner for 17 snaps.
He has excellent size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) and athleticism. He is a converted safety and that is a big reason why he is so good in coverage, which is the most important aspect of linebackers in the modern NFL. He is also very good at both stopping the run and rushing the passer. Simmons is very NFL ready, he could step in and be one of the best or the very best player on this defense.
