2020 NFL mock draft: Two teams trade up for franchise quarterbacks
By Evan Bachman
Whether Tom Brady leaves this offseason or not, the Patriots need to at least highly consider taking a quarterback this year. At this stage in the draft, it’s difficult to find a quarterback who’s ready to start right away, so they’re basically just looking at projects and Jacob Eason certainly fits that bill.
Eason is a pretty fascinating prospect. He has prototypical physical traits with elite size (6-foot-6, 227 pounds) and an outstanding arm as he can throw the ball a mile and can deliver passes with velocity. He also has shown that not only can he throw the ball far, but when he does it’s with good touch and accuracy.
Despite those ideal physical traits, he needs to develop the mental aspect of his game to become a starting quality quarterback in the NFL. Washington’s offense right now utilizes a lot of screens and quick passes, so he does get a lot of pretty easy completions where he doesn’t have to think too much.
Obviously Michael Thomas is incredible, but they really don’t have any good receivers besides him. Adding Tee Higgins to this offense is just a scary proposition for the rest of the NFL, they already have one of the best offenses in the league and now you’d be giving Drew Brees another weapon to work with.
The fact that Tee Higgins is considered the fourth-best receiver in this class should tell you all you need to know about how good this receiving class. Higgins has a big frame (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) and he uses that to his advantage very well in contested catch situations. He can also stretch the field very well as a deep threat. He’s also very good as a route runner, he is quick in and out of his breaks.
