2020 NFL Mock Draft: Raiders, Jaguars make big trades in round one
The Scouting Combine did no favors for a top-five talent in Derrick Brown. While Brown’s tape flies off the screen, his combine performance left many evaluators questioning his true athleticism. But I’m not reading too much into his combine performance. When you have Derrick Brown in full pads and a three-point stance he is a nightmare for opposing offenses.
The Carolina Panthers are in a huge rebuild right now. With a new front office and coaching staff, Carolina seems to be taking things in a new direction. They lost Luke Kuechly to retirement, Greg Olsen to the Seattle Seahawks and multiple defensive linemen to free agency.
Pairing Derrick Brown with Kawann Short would create quite the potent tandem in the trenches for the sure-to-be new-look Panthers defense. Brown is effective as an interior pass rusher and is an absolute wrecker in the run game. He sheds blocks like no other and plays to and through the whistle snap after snap.
The Panthers could go in a few different directions here including Justin Herbert if they want a young QB to develop behind Cam Newton (or to immediately take over for him). They just traded for an offensive tackle in Russell Okung and would be crazy to pass up on Isaiah Simmons if he was still on the board.
I’m not overreacting to some testing and workouts at the combine. Derrick Brown is a beast when you watch him play. He can make an impact on every single play and fills a big position of need for the Panthers and their new regime.
