2020 NFL Mock Draft: Raiders, Jaguars make big trades in round one
Of all the prospects at the combine, Tristan Wirfs probably had the best showing of them all. Everything he did he did at an extremely high level. Add in his impressive tape and you have the first offensive tackle off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft.
While Wirfs primarily played right tackle at Iowa, he did see some time at left tackle and absolutely has the potential to make the full-time switch to the left side of the ball if his team so chooses.
With the Chargers trading away offensive tackle Russell Okung in exchange for guard Trai Turner, the team’s need at the position was greatly exacerbated. Sure, the Chargers could use a young quarterback to build around for the future, and I have paired the Chargers and Justin Herbert very frequently in my 2020 NFL mock drafts, but LA can’t pass up on their choice of players at their biggest position of need.
Tristan Wirfs is a versatile blocker who can dominate in the run game and hold his own in pass protection on the edge. While he is still developing his technique in pass sets, Wirfs is incredibly athletic and powerful, allowing him to anchor a side of the line and be a real force as a run blocker.
The Chargers really can’t go wrong here. If they totally love Herbert, he’s here for them at six. I don’t really see them jumping over the Dolphins to three or four, but here at six, they have a ton of great options. Young quarterback, a choice of offensive tackles, or an impact defensive player like Derrick Brown are all very viable choices.
