1. Sign QB Jameis Winston (3 years, $81 million)

I think the Chargers, or any team who signs Jameis Winston, is merely going to have to show him the money instead of having all of the pieces on the roster in place beforehand.

Winston is coming off of a very odd season in which he threw over 30 touchdown passes but also 30 interceptions.

Winston believes that having Lasik surgery this offseason is going to remove some of the issues he’s having with throwing the ball to the other team, and some team is going to make a substantial financial investment to find out if he’s right.

The Chargers, who decided this offseason to move on from Philip Rivers, could be the team to take the shot on Winston.

First and foremost, this team is poised to compete, at least defensively. The Chargers have some of the NFL’s top defensive stars in Joey Bosa and Derwin James, and a number of other very good players besides.

They need to bring a QB who can help them win games, and down the stretch this past season, as often as Jameis Winston contributed to tough Bucs losses, he also threw for over 2,100 yards and 14 touchdowns during a six-game stretch in November/December where the Bucs went 5-1.

As a former top overall pick, the talent is certainly there for Winston. The ability to make consistently good decisions with the ball hasn’t been there.

Signing Winston to a three-year deal and perhaps a team option after year one or two would allow flexibility for both the player and the team.

Winston would get to hit free agency after hopefully proving himself as a worthy starter and the Chargers would be able to get out of the deal if he’s out there throwing 30 interceptions.
