New England Patriots: 2020 NFL Draft late-round sleeper targets
By Ian Higgins
The final late-round player of this article is going to be another possible grab-and-hope candidate for Bill Belichick to refine into a starting quarterback when ready. The two most recent attempts in the latter portions of the NFL Draft have been San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and Jarrett Stidham, who did not show much as a rookie last season. Steve Montez is a mentally polished passer out of Colorado who could have an opportunity to develop with the right coaching.
Montez was a multi-year starter at Colorado which gave him the opportunity to become more refined in the mental part of football and make the right decisions at the right time. His smart passing led to three straight seasons of over 2,800 yards passing and 17 touchdowns. His completion percentage always settled in the 60s on approximately 400 attempts, making him a perfect candidate for a Belichick-brand game-manager quarterback.
One of the major issues plaguing Montez was his lack of accuracy and inconsistency from play to play. These mechanical issues are covered in more detail in his scouting report and have simple fixes which should be found by any competent coaching staff within his first training camp. Montez is a smart passer who would draw comparisons to a young Brady and could develop into a consistent game-manager that can act as a serviceable center-piece to a Patriots offense.
