Las Vegas Raiders: 2020 NFL Draft late-round sleeper targets
By Ian Higgins
After having a quietly impressive combine overshadowed by the first round talents of the 2020 NFL Draft, Carlos Davis ran a 4.82 forty and had 27 reps fo 225 pounds at 313 pounds. Davis is a physical three-technique defensive tackle whose skillset should fit right into Las Vegas’ defensive front. Davis shows both his forty and bench numbers in his play with strong pushes that can put interior linemen on the back foot.
One major issue plaguing Davis’ production, especially in the pass rush is his lack of hand fighting and polish in pass-rushing technique. Davis currently relies on his size and strength to attempt to overpower opposing interior linemen, but that will only work against a select few opponents.
If Davis is to become a viable interior defensive lineman in the NFL, he will need to find a couple of reliable pass-rush moves to work from. Two moves that could work with his current athletic capabilities are a swim move to get to the outside hip of a blocker and burst by, as well as a hump move (a Reggie White staple) to use his strength.
The Las Vegas Raiders do not have any overly talented interior linemen to complement edge talents Clelin Ferrell and Maxx Crosby, but the addition of pieces to rotate throughout the course of a game is a popular team-building strategy in the modern NFL and could work in Las Vegas as well.
