Kansas City Chiefs mock 2020 offseason: Aiming for a repeat
One big cut: WR Sammy Watkins
Although Sammy Watkins played a role in the Kansas City Chiefs getting to and winning Super Bowl LIV, from an outside perspective, it really feels like he’s replaceable in Andy Reid’s offense.
Watkins’ long speed makes him a solid vertical threat, but he hasn’t posted over 1,000 yards since 2015, his second season in the league with the Buffalo Bills.
After bouncing from Buffalo to Los Angeles to Kansas City, Watkins has certainly accomplished quite a bit in a number of NFL cities, including now winning his first championship, and he will flaunt his tremendous 2019-20 postseason numbers to other teams in hopes of getting yet another big contract this offseason.
He averaged over 92 yards per game in the playoffs this year and had seven catches for 114 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship win over the Tennessee Titans, but with a $21 million cap hit in 2020, there’s no way the Chiefs can justify keeping him.
Even though he carries a $7 million dead cap figure this season, the Chiefs can save $14 million by moving on, and that $14 million can go towards re-signing or tagging Chris Jones as well as making a big move I think the Chiefs are poised to make…
