Kansas City Chiefs mock 2020 offseason: Aiming for a repeat
The Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to do something that hasn’t been done in a long time: repeat at Super Bowl Champs. This offseason plan can make it happen.
The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions, and with Patrick Mahomes only entering his third year as a starter in 2020, they have their sights (rightfully) set on repeating as champs.
Because of Mahomes’ youth and pure dominance of the rest of the league in his first two years as the Chiefs’ starter, the Chiefs will be an attractive destination for prominent veteran free agents who are chasing after rings, and Mahomes’ presence at quarterback amplifies the value of pretty much any player added to the offense.
How will the Chiefs operate their 2020 offseason to get back to the Super Bowl in the 2020 season?
General manager Brett Veach is working with just under $14 million in cap space before the Chiefs start making roster cuts, and with a potential mega-extension for Mahomes coming as soon as next offseason, things will soon get a little tight in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have a couple of roster cuts they can make to add cap space this offseason, but this team will have to make sacrifices of veteran players they might otherwise prefer to keep in order to sign players to cheaper contracts, and they undoubtedly need to hit on their draft picks as frequently as possible (picking at the bottom of each round).
The Chiefs are expected to franchise tag defensive lineman Chris Jones this offseason if they can’t work out a long-term deal, which will cost them somewhere around $15-16 million.
If that’s the case, the Chiefs don’t have a ton of money to work with, but the beauty sometimes of having the type of success they are having as a team combined with the idea of playing alongside a guy like Mahomes is, players are often willing to kick the can down the road if need be, or they might be willing to make some financial sacrifices for a chance at winning.
Let’s predict the major moves for the Chiefs this offseason — one big cut, one big free agent move, and their draft class.
