Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Top positional needs for the 2020 offseason
By Evan Bachman
Safety
The Buccaneers safety play last season was completely abysmal. According to PFF, out of 86 qualified safeties the Buccaneers had Andrew Adams who was ranked 63rd, Mike Edwards who was ranked 76th, and Jordan Whitehead who was ranked 86th. Adams being a free agent in the offseason also doesn’t help matters.
Upgrading their safeties can go a long way for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in improving upon their pass defense, which ranked 30th in passing yards given up per game at 270.1, according to NFL.com. They have solid enough cornerback play that even if just find a way to get two reasonable NFL starting quality safeties it can make a big difference.
They do have plenty of money to spend in free agency and there are a lot of solid safety options out there. They also can look to the draft, which while the safety class isn’t particularly strong does have many prospects who can start right away. They have their own picks in rounds one through six and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them take two safeties.
Potential Free Agent Targets: Anthony Harris, Karl Joseph, Devin McCourty, Justin Simmons, Rodney McLeod, Jimmie Ward, Tavon Wilson, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Damarious Randall, Vonn Bell, Tre Boston
Potential Draft Targets: Grant Delpit, Xavier McKinney, Ashtyn Davis, Antoine Winfield Jr., Terrell Burgess, Kyle Dugger, J.R. Reed
