Quarterback

The biggest question of the offseason for the Buccaneers is what they do at quarterback. Jameis Winston is an unrestricted free agent so that means that they have a few options: sign Winston to a long-term contract, franchise tag Winston for a projected $27 million, according to nfltraderumors.co, sign a new quarterback in free agency like Philip Rivers, Teddy Bridgewater, or Marcus Mariota, or trade for a new quarterback like Andy Dalton or Cam Newton.

The most likely answer here is to franchise tag Winston to give him next year to prove himself. Winston is a former number one overall pick and he has shown that he is clearly very talented throughout his career, but has had major issues with decision making and consistency. Last season, he led the league in passing yards but threw an absurd 30 interceptions (only three quarterbacks threw more than 16 last season, according to NFL.com) and seven pick-sixes.

If they do decide to franchise tag Winston it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t still look to draft one this year. Franchise tagging him allows them to keep him without committing a lot of money to him long term, so Winston shouldn’t stop them from taking one of the more project type quarterbacks in this draft if they think they can develop them.
