Miami Dolphins 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Building a dynamic offense
The Miami Dolphins traded their own second-round pick in this 2020 NFL mock draft in order to get in position to land Tua Tagovailoa. However, they still have another second-round pick and they use it to build out their offensive attack even more. Back-to-back LSU players and four in a row from the SEC here as the Dolphins add running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the second round.
Edwards-Helaire was an extremely important cog in the incredible LSU offense last season. In 2019, he carried the ball 215 times for 1,414 yards (6.6 YPC average) and 16 touchdowns. He also hauled in 55 receptions for 453 yards and one touchdown as a receiver. Simply put, Edwards-Helaire was a dynamic playmaker for LSU and put himself in position to be considered one of the best running backs in the 2020 NFL Draft class.
Edwards-Helaire checks in with a strong, stout frame at 5-foot-7, 207 pounds. He is a smart running back who shows high-level ball carrier vision. CEH does an incredible job of setting up opposing linebackers with a quick look inside, before sticking his foot into the ground, changing directions and busting it through the hole in space. His size helps him hide behind the offensive line and he uses patience to not expose himself to the defense until necessary.
With impressive short-area quickness, Edwards-Helaire can change directions and get to where he needs to be quickly. He works through traffic extremely well and when he finds the hole, CEH shows solid burst in the open field. When a defender can get to him, Edwards-Helaire shows good power at the point of attack and great natural contact balance. His combination of quick feet and power makes him an incredibly difficult player to get on the ground.
Edwards-Helaire undoubtedly has massive upside as a runner, but he is arguably even more impressive as a receiver out of the backfield. He is a smooth route runner who runs an advanced route tree for a running back. CEH creates separation well, shows soft hands and can undoubtedly create after the catch.
If the Miami Dolphins take a young quarterback like Tagovailoa early in the 2020 NFL Draft, snagging a good receiver back like Edwards-Helaire would certainly make some sense. CEH is an extremely impressive running back prospect who fits the modern NFL to a tee.
