Miami Dolphins 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Building a dynamic offense
With their third and final first-round selection of this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Miami Dolphins get Tua a dynamic pass-catcher at the wide receiver position. Justin Jefferson was absolutely incredible at LSU in 2019, finishing the year with 111 receptions for 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was one of the premier targets in the best college football offense in recent memory and could immediately become a dynamic playmaker for Miami.
Jefferson did a majority of his damage out of the slot at LSU, showing an advanced route tree and tremendous natural route-running ability. Jefferson is quick in and out of breaks and shows impressive acceleration. He is a nifty route runner who changes speeds well and consistently wins with strong footwork. Jefferson can separate against most cornerbacks in man coverage and has a knack for finding the soft spots against zone.
On top of that, Jefferson shows strong hands at all times. He has a wide catch radius and does a nice job of coming down with inaccurate balls. He consistently catches the ball away from his body and shows fantastic concentration in contested-catch situations. Once the ball is in his hands, Jefferson shows a great combination of power and short-area quickness that makes him a difficult player to take down in space.
Jefferson did put on a bit of a show at the NFL Scouting Combine, running a 4.43 40-yard dash, the eight-best time of any wide receiver in the class. He shows some nice long speed on tape, separating against cornerbacks on the deep ball. However, Jefferson is not considered a burner. That 40-time was impressive and should only help his draft stock.
In this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Miami Dolphins found their franchise quarterback and are using their extra draft capital to build a strong offense around him. Jefferson is a stand-out player in a loaded wide receiver class and he could come in and quickly become the number one target in the Dolphins’ offense.
