Miami Dolphins 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Building a dynamic offense
With their second selection of this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Dolphins protect their investment in Tagovailoa by starting to build their offensive line. Andrew Thomas falls all the way to the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NFL mock draft and the Dolphins happily sit back and bring him into the mix.
Thomas was widely considered the top offensive lineman in the class earlier in the process, but as time has gone on, others have seemed to pass him up. With the rise of Alabama’s Jedrick Wills Jr., Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton, Thomas will now likely be the fourth offensive tackle off of the board in April.
This could be a situation where we are over-thinking a prospect. Thomas is still an incredibly talented and consistent prospect who should have a bright future at the next level. He is not an elite athlete at the offensive tackle position, but it is not like he is slow. Thomas gets off of the ball quickly and can move in space a bit. On top of that, he is an incredibly strong and powerful prospect who has fantastic on-field awareness.
Thomas is a dominant run blocker who would consistently clear out lanes for the Miami Dolphins in the passing game. He is also a strong pass protector who understands how to make the most out of his abilities. Thomas does a great job of riding out edge rushers and giving his quarterback a lane to step up and make the throw down the field. He understands how to protect his passer and does a great job of keeping himself between the rusher and the quarterback.
Whether the Dolphins would keep Thomas at left tackle or move him to the right side to protect Tagovailoa’s blindside, he would be a great player for them to build their offensive line around. Snagging him at No. 18 overall in this 2020 NFL mock draft is highway robbery.
