Boston College running back AJ Dillon had an outstanding performance at the 2020 Combine and his NFL Draft stock is on the rise.

Boston College running back AJ Dillon turned in one of the most intriguing performances among his position group at the 2020 Scouting Combine, pointing his 2020 NFL Draft stock arrow way up.

Although the combine is not necessarily an ‘evaluating’ tool, it’s part of the overall evaluation. There is plenty of tape out there on Dillon and every other player in this draft, but sometimes guys put on a workout performance that causes you to go back to the tape and watch through a different lens.

That’s what Dillon’s workout at the combine did.

At 6-foot, 247 pounds, Dillon was already a fascinating study, but then he posted some wild numbers.

  • 4.53 40-yard dash
  • 41-inch vertical jump
  • 131-inch broad jump
  • 23 bench press reps
  • 7.19 three-cone drill

There aren’t many workouts like that from a running back that is pushing 250 pounds, although Derrick Henry’s workout was similar a few years ago.

What do these numbers tell us? Well, AJ Dillon is a big, explosive, fast running back who is not going to be much fun to tackle with a full head of steam.

Over the course of three years at Boston College, Dillon carried the ball 845 times with 4,382 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also added a pair of receiving touchdowns in his time at Boston College and he’s certainly proven that he’s capable of being a featured back at the next level.

For a guy whose reputation is more of a ‘between the tackles’ type of runner, these numbers are so important. Dillon has an outstanding chance of getting scooped up at some point on day two with his college production combined with this type of athletic upside.

The 2020 running back class has a few interesting guys at the top, but Dillon’s production and usage in college is an obvious indicator that his body hasn’t been worn down at all.
