Washington Redskins doing more than due diligence with QBs
The Washington Redskins are likely to draft Chase Young when all is said and done, but a top QB prospect could change their minds.
The Washington Redskins are most likely going to be taking Ohio State defensive end Chase Young with the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Young is the best prospect in this class regardless of position, even with Joe Burrow coming off of such an outstanding campaign at LSU. Young’s physical traits are special, and in many years he would be a top overall pick.
Young would undoubtedly be a game-changer for the Redskins and new head coach Ron Rivera, but that doesn’t mean Washington is going to simply forsake their opportunity to consider all options with the second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
As a matter of fact, the Redskins had formal meetings with the top quarterbacks in this year’s class — Joe Burrow and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.
Dwayne Haskins was the 15th overall pick in last year’s draft and in nine games (seven starts) he completed 58.6 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The Redskins couldn’t assume Haskins would simply light it up his first year in the pros, especially on a team with a head coach (Jay Gruden) who was on the hot seat.
Now, Haskins is kind of stuck in a similar situation to that of Josh Rosen last year with the Cardinals. Arizona hired a new head coach one year after they traded up to draft Rosen, and despite the fact that Rosen understandably struggled as a rookie in a bad situation, the Cardinals saw an opportunity to upgrade and they took it.
The Redskins can’t pass on the opportunity to take a player with franchise QB potential if they feel he has it, and Tua Tagovailoa might be a prospect worth moving on from Haskins for.
It doesn’t seem likely the Redskins would be able to get Joe Burrow with his most likely destination being Cincinnati at this point, but if Tagovailoa can impress Washington in meetings and with a workout sometime in April, it’s very possible that they could go from Chase Young being the unquestioned second pick to Tua Tagovailoa being their guy.
This situation bears monitoring over the course of the next couple of months. Don’t print the Chase Young jerseys just yet, Washington.
