2020 NFL Draft: Ohio St RB J.K. Dobbins top five team fits
By Ian Higgins
2020 Projected Starter: Ronald Jones
Key Free Agents: Peyton Barber
After the tumultuous season with Jameis Winston, Bruce Arians and company will be looking for an additional source of production to take the weight off of their quarterback. It is unknown where Winston will be moving to this offseason, but if he is to return to Tampa Bay, a threatening running game would be a step forward.
Current running backs Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones have given Tampa Bay a solid one-two punch in the backfield, but neither player has jumped out as a number one back, nor a threatening playmaker. With Barber about to hit the open market, if Dobbins were to be brought in the likely only remaining 2019 Bucs running back would be Jones.
Between Barber and Jones, the latter is the better fit alongside Dobbins. Jones has operated as the open-space back in this system and has also led in both carries and receptions. Neither category has been anywhere near the league-lead, but within the organization, Jones has been the closest to a feature-back. Dobbins would fill in directly for Barber and become the more physical of the two backs.
Tampa Bay needs a true playmaker in their backfield to take the pressure off of the passing game, and Dobbins is the perfect player to make that happen. Between his receiving ability in open space, to his interior running that can break open for a chunk gain, Tampa has a playmaker available to them in the 2020 NFL draft that can change their identity within two years.
