2020 NFL Draft first-round NFL mock draft: Senior Bowl shuffle
By Ian Higgins
2019 Starters: Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat
Measurables: 6-foot-5, 265 pounds
Projected 40 time: 4.67
The age of the edge rusher, Washington would be more than happy to bring in a nearly guaranteed All-Pro sack master and defensive monster in Chase Young. Young is likely the closest thing to a “perfect prospect” pairing freakish athleticism with well-polished technique.
With current franchise pass-rusher Ryan Kerrigan nearing old age and a young core built around Ohio State alumni Dwayne Haskins and Terry McLaurin, Young could be the young defensive centerpiece to be placed alongside Landon Collins.
2019 Starters: Darius Slay, Justin Coleman
Measurables: 6-foot-1, 200 pounds
Projected 40 time: 4.53
The top corner in the 2020 NFL Draft, Detroit needs help at corner. Recent trade rumors surrounding Darius Slay suggest Detroit will be finding its new franchise piece in the secondary, possibly moving away from Slay’s specialty in man-to-man defense.
Premier corners need to have the athleticism to keep up with modern wideouts, and Okudah has the blend of physicality and speed to keep up with freakish athletes such as Julio Jones and A.J. Green. Cover-three zone defenses have become the popular coverage scheme of the NFL since the ‘Legion of Boom’ and defensive mastermind Matt Patricia will look to create a second-sect of the Patriots dynasty.
2019 Starters: Nate Solder, Mike Remmers
Measurables: 6-foot-5, 320 pounds
Projected 40 time: 5.14
With a monstrous contract held by failing left tackle Nate Solder, New York needs a young tackle to come in to protect Daniel Jones. Young quarterbacks need help being protected to avoid career-long fear of edge rushers, and Jones can not be plagued by the same pressure that Eli Manning dealt with throughout his career.
Jedrick Wills Jr. is the top tackle of the class, showing quick feet and power to match up against any edge rusher from day one. Having a strong tackle on the C-gap will also give New York a new outside running presence with back Saquon Barkley.
2019 Starters: Julie’n Davenport, Jesse Davis
Measurables: 6-foot-5, 320 pounds
Projected 40 time: 5.09
Before being surpassed by Alabama product Jedrick Wills, Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas was considered the number one tackle of the 2020 NFL Draft. Even though he has been surpassed, Thomas is still an NFL-ready offensive tackle who can be trusted to protect a young franchise quarterback. Miami will be finding their quarterback of the future very soon, and need to have the pieces in place to protect that player.
