Washington Redskins brain trust set on Chase Young already?
The Washington Redskins and their brain trust of Ron Rivera and Daniel Snyder may already be in agreement on Chase Young as the team’s top selection.
Not that it should come as much of a surprise, but if the 2020 NFL Draft is going to start with LSU quarterback Joe Burrow going to the Cincinnati Bengals (or someone else), it will more than likely continue with Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young going to the Washington Redskins.
According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, the presumed second overall pick of the Redskins is the favored prospect of new head coach Ron Rivera. Not only is he the favorite of Rivera, but apparently Rivera and owner Daniel Snyder are unified in their desire to select Young.
Again, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise by any means because Young is probably the best player in this draft class regardless of position, but it is a huge step in the right direction for Washington as a franchise to be on a unified front.
Ron Rivera, whose previous head coaching job started with taking over the 2-14 Carolina Panthers in a lockout offseason, has inherited a team that certainly has talent, but plenty of turmoil in addition to that talent.
Even though it wasn’t necessarily the fault of the previous head coaching staff, Rivera is also already mending fences between the Redskins and one of their star players, offensive tackle Trent Williams.
It can’t be overstated how critical the Redskins getting both Trent Williams (back) and Chase Young is going to be for this franchise in terms of immediate changes to the on-field product.
Williams, when healthy, is one of the best left tackles in the entire league. Young, in my estimation, is going to have an even more significant year one impact than his former Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa had this past year for the San Francisco 49ers.
The on-field upgrades coming for the Redskins coupled with the impact Ron Rivera is making on the overall culture of the team could be the ingredients needed for this team to go from worst to first in their division, so long as Dwayne Haskins can progress as the team undoubtedly expects him to.
Rivera and his staff along with the Redskins front office have more work to do, but getting Williams back on board with the team as well as drafting Chase Young seem to be two moves indicating a complete turning of the tide in the Nation’s Capital.
