Derek Carr sends cryptic message with Instagram photo
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr sent a cryptic message on his Instagram account with a photo of he and Bears OLB Khalil Mack.
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was the subject of trade rumors all throughout the 2019 offseason and Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock actually seemed to send some messages publicly that the Raiders were at least considering alternatives seriously.
In January, Gruden was again non-committal on Carr’s future with the team.
As a matter of fact, it seems like Carr has been with the Raiders on a year-to-year basis since Gruden was named head coach of the team in 2018.
Although nothing is for certain at this point, it feels like the Raiders could consider making a big change at the quarterback position and they’ve already been rumored as one of the leading landing spots if Tom Brady leaves New England.
Then, Derek Carr posted this to his Instagram account, throwing some fuel on the rumor fire.
What does “#MegaPowers” mean?
Maybe this photo means absolutely nothing and Carr is simply posting a photo of he and one of his good pals.
The timing, however, is very curious and considering the Raiders and Bears have come together on a massive trade already once before, it’s possible they could do it again.
It would cost the Bears $16.5 million against the 2020 salary cap to trade for Carr, and it would obviously allow both teams to start fresh in a way at the position.
Chicago has a playoff contending team and Mitch Trubisky is a major reason why they might be at a plateau. They can’t really just sit around and wait for him to develop if he’s actually showing signs of regression, and while Carr is not necessarily a major elevator of talent around him, he’s a much more stable player than Trubisky at this point and could probably help the Bears win more games.
As for the Raiders, it makes sense to move on from Carr for the simple fact that almost every time an NFL team hires a new head coach, they also bring in a quarterback of their choosing. Up to this point, the Raiders under Jon Gruden have not done that.
Because of the Khalil Mack trade, the Bears are without a first-round pick this offseason, but it’s highly doubtful that Carr would cost that much. He might not even be worth a second-round pick if the Raiders have him on the market.
Unfortunately, the Bears only have two second-round picks before their next selection in the fifth round. Perhaps the two teams could come to an agreement on some kind of player/future draft compensation, but if the sides are motivated to get a deal done, this is a landing spot that makes some sense for Carr and would allow the Raiders to start fresh at the position.
