Houston Texans seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft
The Texans struggled to defend opposing passing attacks all season long in 2019. Their 267.3 passing yards allowed per game were the fourth-most in the entire NFL and they were the 26th ranked pass defense in the entire NFL, according to Football Outsider’s DVOA defensive efficiency ratings. The secondary certainly had their issues, but their lack of a consistent pass rush hurt this team all season long.
The team locked up edge rusher Whitney Mercilus with a four-year extension toward the end of the season and having a healthy J.J. Watt for the entire year would undoubtedly help as well. That being said, the Houston Texans simply need to find a way to add more impact rushers this offseason. In the second round of this mock draft, they take a chance on Josh Uche, an exciting edge rusher out of Michigan.
Uche is a long and athletic edge rusher who shows an explosive first step and incredible bend around the edge. Uche shines as a wide speed rusher who can win with his immediate explosion, dip under the offensive tackle, turn the corner and attack the quarterback. His quickness, flexibility and closing speed as a pass rusher gives him a great chance to come in and make an immediate impact at the next level.
While he does lack ideal bulk and is not much of a run defender, Uche has the skill-set to come in and create pressure on the passer in a situational role right away. Uche is not a perfect prospect, but he is an extremely talented player who would fill an obvious need for the Houston Texans.
