2020 NFL Draft: Henry Ruggs goes top 10 in first-round NFL mock draft
The Los Angeles Chargers are in for a new era after confirming that quarterback Philip Rivers will not return to the team in 2020. Head coach Anthony Lynn did sign a one-year extension, so he will likely be around to head this era. Quarterback has to be the pick for the Chargers here, despite a major need along the offensive line.
It’s tempting to put Jordan Love and his uber-talented arm in this spot to Los Angeles, but it feels a little too early for him to come off the board. Instead, the Chargers select Justin Herbert out of Oregon.
Herbert could have been a top pick in last year’s draft but opted to return to the Ducks for his senior season. Even with him returning, it doesn’t feel like his draft stock has changed very much from last year to this year.
Herbert has the arm talent to push the ball down the field vertically and doesn’t lose any arm strength or accuracy throwing on the move. He also improved his touch in 2019. Questions still exist with his ability to come off his first read and his inconsistency with accuracy down the field, but the Chargers need a quarterback here in the 2020 NFL Draft and Herbert has the upside worth the pick.
