2020 NFL Draft: Henry Ruggs goes top 10 in first-round NFL mock draft
Next up are the Philadelphia Eagles, who once again made a late run in the regular season to get into the playoffs, despite a slew of injuries throughout the roster. The Super Bowl 52 champs have seen a decline in two spots on the roster: the receiving core and the secondary. The receiver class is deep in the 2020 NFL Draft, and with the top defensive backs thinning here in round one, the Eagles go secondary here at 21.
Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz loves to bring the heat on opposing quarterbacks, which can often leave the secondary on an island. The key here is to find a defensive back who can stick in man coverage and also play some centerfield to recognize and attack with limitless range.
The good news is that there’s a versatile defensive back right here for the taking. Xavier McKinney is exactly what this defense needs, and may become a popular pick in mock drafts for Philly until April. McKinney can operate near the line of scrimmage with his speed, instincts, and tackling ability, but he can also operate in a single high or deep third look, where he can read and react with his range and instincts. He would likely get snaps at safety and corner and thrive.
