2020 NFL Free Agency: 5 Teams who should target QB Philip Rivers
By Ian Higgins
2019 Starting QB: Jacoby Brissett
Cap Space: $86,137,492
So far, reports have claimed Indianapolis to be the leading suitor for Rivers, and the fit makes perfect sense. With plenty of cap room to play with and an already competitive roster on both sides of the ball, Indianapolis could take another step-up in their 2020 season with an established veteran under center.
Jacoby Brissett was a serviceable piece under center after the sudden loss of franchise cornerstone Andrew Luck but he is not the player to take this team to the promised land.
Indianapolis managed to rank 16th in total defense in 2019, led by likely the most underrated superstar in the NFL Darius Leonard. There was so much underutilized talent on this roster waiting to be unlocked in 2019 by Andrew Luck, but with his retirement, the plans of a 2019 Super Bowl were washed out to sea.
Offensively, T.Y. Hilton lost his sole star quarterback with the retirement of Luck and Rivers could be a new opportunity for similar success. Running backs Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines have made a quality one-two punch to build an offense from, and an offensive line highlighted by Quenton Nelson is one of the most dominant in the NFL.
If Philip Rivers were to inherit this Indianapolis offense, he could take on a similar role to what would be inherited in Carolina as a game-manager capitalizing on the talent around him with a strong run game.
