2020 NFL Free Agency: 5 Teams who should target QB Philip Rivers
By Ian Higgins
2019 Starting QB: Mitchell Trubisky
Cap Space: $13,356,679
With little to no cap room to utilize in the inevitable replacement of draft bust Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago would be a destination for Rivers requiring a pay cut in exchange for an improved situation. Philip Rivers could operate as either a bridge quarterback with the trade of incumbent starter Trubisky or be the immediate future of the Bears, disregarding the 2020 quarterback class.
Since being eliminated from the 2018 postseason by the leg of Cody Parkey, Chicago as lacked the same defensive dominance they possessed that season. By bringing in a (hopefully) cheap veteran such as Rivers to fill in at the quarterback position, Chicago would be able to trade Trubisky for additional draft capital as open a minimal amount of cap space along with forgetting the worries of his fifth-year team-option.
This additional mid-round draft capital would be well spent on filling out the defensive side of the ball behind Khalil Mack & Co. Chicago currently sports a respectable offense that needs to utilize former rookie David Montgomery alongside undersized dynamic ‘joystick’ Tarik Cohen.
Tight end Trey Burton had an underrated 2018 season, and complementing tight end J.P. Holtz finished his 2019 campaign strong, providing a good future at a unique position for the Bear’s organization. Rivers had plenty of success with Hunter Henry (when healthy) in Los Angeles and could look to do the same in Chicago with new targets.
