2020 NFL Free Agency: 5 Teams who should target QB Philip Rivers
By Ian Higgins
With no legitimate playoff success throughout his career, Philip Rivers looks to a new chapter. Which team could bring him his first deep postseason run?
In his eight postseason appearances with the Chargers, Philip Rivers has only achieved a .500 record. Quite simply, Philip Rivers has never succeeded in the postseason. Regardless of all of his regular-season statistical superlatives and impressive performance over such a long period of time, without success in the part of the season where it all matters it will be much more difficult to consider Rivers among some of the game’s all-time greats.
Ever since being drafted in the 2004 NFL draft alongside Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger, Rivers has always played second-fiddle to the two legends and become an afterthought throughout the league along with his team (one exception for the 14-2 ’06 Chargers with teammates LaDanian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates).
This will be the first time Rivers is realistically leaving his original draft-team in his career and needs to be looking for a chance at cementing his legacy rather than hunting for a final paycheck. Few teams in the NFL are going to be offering premium money for Rivers after his tumultuous 2019 campaign (leading the Chargers to a 5-11 record and 23 touchdowns to 20 interceptions).
Rivers needs to understand going into the free agency market that many other premium quarterbacks hold precedent over him, and the only way to find himself on a competitive roster will be through a cap-friendly deal enabling more expenditures in other areas of the team.
He is not going to be the big contract quarterback to build a team around, but instead, a veteran-version of the recent trend teams have taken on working through an inexpensive rookie as compared to a franchise cornerstone at quarterback.
