2020 NFL Draft: Dallas Cowboys 7-Round Mock Draft
By Ian Higgins
Stuck in mediocrity, Jerry Jones looks to revitalize his team with Mike McCarthy. Could the 2020 NFL draft signify a new era of Dallas Cowboys football?
After a disappointing 2019 campaign with no playoff appearance, Jerry Jones has decided to move on from long-standing head coach Jason Garrett in favor of former Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy.
With current offensive stars Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott looking like the biggest cap hits on the roster, Dallas will need to find young talent in the 2020 NFL draft to be competitive.
Dallas currently has three high-priority free agents on the offensive side of the ball. Starting receivers Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb, followed by money-hungry quarterback Dak Prescott. Previous contract talks during the 2019 season would have paid Prescott at $33 million a year before talks disintegrated and forced the conversation to this offseason.
The 2020 NFL draft provides a deep pool of wide receivers who can be contributors from day one, meaning both Cooper and Cobb would be expendable if they are unable to return at the right price. With McCarthy being the new head coach in Dallas and Cobb having produced success with him in the past, a return for Cobb seems much more likely than his receiving counter-part and former Raider product Cooper.
Defensively, Dallas currently has a young nucleus of talented players who should be considered the future of the franchise, arguably ahead of the offensive talent on display. Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith have been outstanding in the middle of the defense, combining high football IQ with consistent and aggressive pursuit of the football.
Star pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence has been a force in the past two seasons, as well as veteran acquisition Robert Quinn. The secondary has been in question for some time though and could use some help alongside Byron Jones.
