2020 NFL Draft: Colorado QB Steven Montez scouting report
By Ian Higgins
Physical Evaluation
At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Montez is a physically imposing player who should be able to hold his own against similarly sized defenders. Even with this size, Montez does not play physically and typically gives himself up when on the run and is an easy sack when the pressure gets to him.
This is not necessarily a negative attribute because of the avoidance of possible injury but takes away a possible dynamic to his game that would draw comparisons to quarterbacks such as Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisberger.
Regardless of his lack of physicality at a position where physicality is a bonus and not a need, Montez isn’t going to amaze anybody with his speed but has the capability to extend the play and create yardage from nothing.
I would compare Montez to Dak Prescott when looking at his speed. Nothing that is going to make you think he is a running quarterback, but enough to remind you that in open space he can hurt you.
Montez is also a big-arm quarterback and is able to push the ball downfield. I will explain in more detail some of the mechanical issues holding him back, but Montez has the arm to get the ball downfield on long-developing routes for chunk plays.
