1. Justin Herbert, Quarterback, University of Oregon

This is probably the most likely pick for the Los Angeles Chargers will make. Herbert fills their need for a talented quarterback while allowing them to most likely stay put at six and take him without giving up a lot of extra capital to acquire one.

Herbert would give the Chargers a fairly accurate decision-maker who can make throws to all spots on the field. Herbert has great arm talent and puts it on display whenever he is on the field.

I remember in a game against Washington this season he got hit low around the knees right before he released the ball, but was still able to thread the ball into a tight window and complete the pass. It is that kind of accuracy and arm talent that will have teams wanting to add him to their rosters.

Herbert is not without his faults. For every few astounding throws he makes, he is also prone to making a mistake that makes you wonder what he saw on the field to lead to making the decision he did. However, all things considered, Herbert should be able to succeed in the Chargers’ offense as he will be surrounded by exceptional receiving talent all over the field and also a respectable run game.

He may have to deal with frequent pressure the first season or two unless the Chargers make some serious moves in free agency and follow up a potential Herbert pick with two offensive linemen. Otherwise, he will need to be mentally prepared to get the ball out quickly and accurately while dealing with defenders in his face.

Garrett Ballard of NFL Mocks recently released his scouting report on Herbert and mentioned how good Herbert was at giving his receivers a chance and avoiding pressure in the pocket. He finished by saying that Herbert’s “arm strength, accuracy and athleticism” are what you like to see in a quarterback.

Overall, Herbert would be a well-spent pick sixth pick as he possesses the necessary talents that can’t be taught or improved upon, as well as being ahead of the curve with things like accuracy. He will need to cut down on his head-scratching throws but would be able to catapult the Los Angeles Chargers back into playoff contention as soon as his rookie season.
