2020 NFL Free Agency: Five teams who should target A.J. Green
By Ian Higgins
Green Bay Packers
Quarterback: Aaron Rodgers
Wide Receivers: Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Cap Room: $21,997,139
‘Old man’ Rodgers needs help. Outside of Davante Adams, he has been relying on unproven youngsters such as Scantling and Lazard and has not been as productive as hoped. The addition of an additional star on the outside at Lambeau has been talked about, but outside of Jimmy Graham, nothing has solidified. This free agency provides multiple opportunities to bolster that wide receiver group.
Rodgers has always been one of the NFL’s premier deep-ball specialists and could rekindle some of his previous magic with two top receivers on the end of his looping passes. A.J. Green has also never had the opportunity to play with a quarterback who can not only deliver the ball like Rodgers but also extend the play and give his receivers time to create space throughout the development of their route.
This additional talent outside is not only going to open up the field for Davante Adams, but it will also create new running lanes for running back duo Aaron Jones & Jamaal Williams. Green Bay, as well as the rest of the NFL, has moved towards a play-action based offense that relies on a consistent running attack complimented by heavy play-action countering defensive flow with the play-fake.
The thought of A.J. Green coming across the backside of the defense should strike fear into safeties, and either open up the deep middle for chunk gains or consistent yardage on the ground.
