2020 NFL Draft: Saints make big move in 2020 NFL mock draft with trades
What a whirlwind the last year or so has been for the Carolina Panthers. Just a few years ago, the Panthers were competing for a Super Bowl. Now their MVP quarterback has been riddled with injuries, they have a new head coach, their All-Pro middle linebacker suddenly retired and their entire defensive line is scheduled to hit free agency.
Obviously one pick isn’t going to solve all of those problems, but a guy like Derrick Brown could definitely help that last one. With so many defensive linemen likely leaving the squad this offseason, adding Brown would be instrumental in rebuilding that defense.
Brown is an absolute force in the middle. He anchors down and plays the run like a 350 lb nose tackle and uses quick evasive moves to slice into the backfield like an elite edge rusher. A player with his ability to make an impact on each and every play would be invaluable to a defense with as many holes as the Panthers.
Wide receiver has been a popular position for the Arizona Cardinals in mock drafts to give second-year quarterback Kyler Murray some more weapons to work with. But I think that a tackle to protect him and give him more time to make plays would be the smarter move. Especially with their choice of any 2020 NFL Draft tackle prospect, I think that is the direction that they would go.
Lately, the number one tackle prospect on most people’s boards has been Alabama blindside protector Jedrick Wills. While Wills played right tackle for the Crimson Tide, he was responsible for guarding the blind side of left-handed QB Tua Tagovailoa.
Wills has a desirable blend of power, technique and athleticism. He is a force in the run game with real grit and nastiness. But he is not just a willful blocker. He is very smart and has great feet and hands. He should be able to make the transition to left tackle, where the Cardinals are losing D.J. Humphries to free agency, or he would be an immediate upgrade on the right side of a struggling offensive line.
