Clemson. Isaiah Simmons. Scouting Report. Supreme Overlord of Defense. 1. player. 31. Pick Analysis

It’s defense first here for the New York Giants. There is a need at offensive tackle opposite Nate Solder, and there are certainly talented players available at number four overall. However, the talent that Clemson utility defender Isaiah Simmons possesses just cannot be passed up here.

It sounds like a philosophical shift on defense is probable under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who Judge stole away from Miami. The defense will be hybrid in nature, and having versatile defenders will be key. That’s where Simmons can step in.

Simmons is one of the best players in the 2020 NFL Draft and his versatility is a big reason why. He played plenty of linebacker at Clemson, and excelled as a blitzer with his closing speed and is a finisher making tackles near the line of scrimmage.

While linebacker is a natural spot for him, so is playing in the secondary. Simmons has shown the ability to play on the back end as a safety with elite range and instincts, and he can drop down and play some slot corner. It would be best for Graham to move him around at times, but ultimately find him a home for the most part. Wherever that is, Simmons will be outstanding.
