Chicago Bears 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Filling key positions of need
The Bears do not have a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but they do hold two second-round selections. With their first pick of this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Bears address an obvious need on the offensive side of the ball, bringing in former Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet.
Adam Shaheen has not progressed the way that the Bears expected him to and Trey Burton struggled with injuries throughout last season. The Bears missed Burton is a big way when he was out last season, as the rest of the tight ends on the roster were not able to pick up the slack. Even if the Chicago Bears keep Burton around, they need to find another tight end who can help keep the offense going if Burton misses time.
Kmet is a smooth route runner who understands how to find space against zone coverage in the middle of the field. He also shows soft hands and the ability to make plays in contested-catch situations. Kmet is a big and athletic target who has obvious upside as a receiving tight end at the next level. He is a willing blocker, but certainly has some work to do in that department.
Overall, Kmet is arguably the best tight end in this draft class and has a bright future at the next level. No matter who ends up playing quarterback for the Bears in the future, Kmet would undoubtedly be a great guy to have on the roster.
