Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft: No. 6 Jake Fromm, Georgia
By John Newman
2020 NFL Draft Prediction: Late Second Round
Fromm has the resume of nearly winning a National title with Georgia in his freshman year, along with leading the Bulldogs offense to three straight top 10 seasons.
His accuracy and game managing style will mean a team will select Fromm in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. But he will need to go to a team that likes having a dependable, safe quarterback who will let his skill position players do the heavy lifting.
The Minnesota Vikings come to mind as a good spot for Fromm. Whether head coach Mike Zimmer likes running his offense like this or not, he was able to get a solid game manager like Kirk Cousins into the playoffs and defeat a stacked New Orleans Saints defense in the Wild Card round this past postseason.
Cousins is on the final year of his fully guaranteed, three-year, 84 million dollar contract in 2020 and the Vikings may want to cut bait and save cap space with a rookie quarterback. Cousins had a disappointing season in 2018 with the Vikings. While he led his team to the divisional round this past season, he continues to be inconsistent at times during the regular season.
Other teams may view Fromm more as a developmental quarterback, who could elevate his play if he works on his pocket management and deep pass processing. A smart team like the New England Patriots could give Fromm a year to train and learn from future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, focusing solely on being the future franchise quarterback.
Any team that wants a purely pocket passing quarterback would be thrilled to get Fromm in the 2020 NFL Draft. The dual-threat quarterback may be back in the NFL, but Fromm’s Pro-style quarterbacking is still regarded as the gold standard for most teams in the NFL.
While general managers for some teams may want a more pro-ready quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, Fromm has shown enough in his three seasons at Georgia to make you believe he could be a franchise quarterback once he works out a few issues.
If Fromm can incorporate more deep passes into his arsenal and work on leaving the pocket when under pressure, he could be an elite quarterback one day.
If Fromm stays the way he is, he would still make an excellent backup quarterback who could win games for an NFL team if their starting quarterback goes down with an injury. Plenty of teams will be searching for a competent backup in the 2020 NFL Draft. Fromm could be an excellent insurance policy for an NFL team for years to come.
