2020 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears top offseason needs
On the surface, this may seem like a relatively small need for the Chicago Bears given that they are currently rostering Khalil Mack. However, in 2019, the Chicago Bears tied with the then Oakland Raiders in total teams sacks at 32, ranking as the eighth-worst team in that area. Leonard Floyd hasn’t blossomed into the sack artist they had hoped, while guys like Aaron Lynch and Devante Bond will likely be lost to free agency.
Interestingly enough, the Chicago Bears could release Floyd this offseason, potentially saving them $13 million in cap space. While this would create a larger hole at the position, the move would free up a lot of space for Chicago and allow them to fill the void with more promising talent.
Given their more pressing needs, the Chicago Bears are likely to address this need on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft. Currently, Chicago owns two fifth-round picks, putting them in a good spot to potentially get an impact player later in the draft. A few names the Chicago Bears could target are Notre Dame’s Khalid Kareem, Anfernee Jennings from Alabama or Bryce Huff from Memphis.
With Mack getting older, the Chicago Bears need to give him a running mate to take off some of the pass-rushing burdens. For an organization that has always prided itself on having elite defenses, the Chicago Bears would do well to address the edge position this coming offseason.
