Cornerback

Sticking on the defensive side of the ball, the New York Jets must upgrade their talent at cornerback. Free agency has a bunch of intriguing options with guys that have experience playing both inside at nickel and outside along the boundaries.

The Jets starting corners Trumaine Johnson and Daryl Roberts struggled mightily before getting injured. Johnson missed the entire season with a slew of injuries and Roberts made it back in time, but lost his starting job to Arthur Maulet and Blessuan Austin. Both Johnson and Roberts will likely be cap casualties in the coming weeks.

Maulet impressed many fans with his solid play. He didn’t give up many big plays and always stepped up to make a tackle. Austin showed his physicality breaking up a ton of passes using his length and size. He however was benched after letting up a deep touchdown catch with seconds left in the first half of a week 16 matchup against the Steelers and did not play in the teams final game.

Gang Green’s best cornerback is scheduled to be a free agent. Brian Poole was signed a few days after being waived by Atlanta. One of the best nickels in the game, Poole was the only consistent corner. He will most definitely be getting a pay raise and the New York Jets would be wise to pay up.
