Offensive Line

Offensive line will be the number one priority for the New York Jets. I, along with many other Jets fans, were forced to watch one of the worst offensive line units in the game this season. The lack of care or effort in their individual assignments were concerning. As a group, they couldn’t pick up blitzes and stunts. The talent level was thought to be an upgrade over the 2018 unit after trading for Kelechi Osemele, but he got hurt early and after a bizarre injury grievance was released.

Douglas brought in veteran center Ryan Kalil off of the couch months after he announced his retirement. He wasn’t anywhere near the level he once was and looked like a guy that was on his couch for several months. The line showed minimal improvement as the season went on after Alex Lewis and Jonotthan Harrison stepped in at center and guard.

The New York Jets will likely need to revamp their entire offensive line with few if any guys returning. Lewis, who will be a free agent, was acquired by Douglas from Baltimore for a 2020 seventh-round pick so I expect him to return after solid play. Harrison is currently under contract so he could compete with whomever the Jets bring in for competition.

Gang Green could see new faces at left tackle, right tackle, center and guard. Kelvin Beachum, who protected Darnold’s blindside, is heading for free agency. He could return on a one year deal, but the Jets could look for an upgrade. Rookie tackle Chuma Edoga showed some good signs, but doesn’t look like a starting option. Brian Winters is a likely cap casualty as he’s always hurt and his play doesn’t warrant his contract.
