Browns 7-round 2020 mock draft: Kevin Stefanski gets revamped OL
One of the top playmakers on the defensive side of the ball in all of college football this past year, Winfield is a rare fourth-year redshirt sophomore who is going to need to convince teams on the medical side of things before he’s guaranteed to be picked this high.
His game tape warrants this selection, however.
The Browns are not without options at the safety positions, but Winfield would be an immediate starter for this unit as a free safety and someone who can simply attack the ball in Joe Woods’ man-heavy defense.
The Browns have two corners in Greedy Williams and Denzel Ward who can excel in man coverage, but they lack a presence at the safety position to really capitalize off of the pressure those corners put on receivers and quarterbacks to push the ball to the middle of the field, and Winfield can sit out there and help them pick teams apart.
He reads the offense so well and the way he fills up a stat sheet is evidence of that.
Winfield had seven interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles for the Gophers last year in addition to three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. As the game continues to slow down for him, he’s going to be the kind of guy who makes it feel like your defense has 12 defenders out there.
