Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft: No. 10 Nate Stanley, Iowa
By John Newman
2020 NFL Draft Prediction: Late Day Three Selection
Despite a solid college resume and record numbers for Iowa, Stanley is just not built for the NFL as it is constituted today.
Forty years ago, he might have been a star as a pure game manager, who could make a dozen throws a game and the rest of the time depend on the running back to move the chains, throwing in a few QB sneak plays in the end zone. Despite diminished play while facing pressure, he is still big and strong and can stay on his feet when being hit.
He has put up quality wins against Ohio State and Nebraska while playing for the Hawkeyes and has shown to have the big arm and size to win games. But in the NFL, defenses are harder, faster and smarter than they are in college. And his inconsistent accuracy makes him unreliable as a starter in the NFL.
That being said, Stanley showed an incredible work ethic during his time in Iowa. He always played hard, worked hard and ran the offense like a pro. He has the athletic ability to make those deep passes when circumstances are in his favor. He ran a pro-style offense for three seasons and won three bowl games in consecutive years.
Stanley will be drafted somewhere in the 2020 NFL Draft. Most likely as a developmental player. If Stanley can fix his accuracy issues and learn to evade defenses on the move, there is no reason to believe he couldn’t find a role for himself in the NFL.
If Nick Foles has taught us anything, it is to never underestimate quality backup quarterbacks.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, there is plenty of quarterbacks being relegated to the later rounds who have the potential to become starters in the NFL. No quarterback that plays in the NCAA is without some talent. Any of these quarterbacks, with some training, could be starting quarterbacks one day.
