2020 NFL Draft: Green Bay Packers top five first-round targets
By Ian Higgins
Current OG’s: Lane Taylor, Billy Turner
With a season-ending injury to starting guard Lane Taylor, Green Bay will look to get young and talented on the offensive interior. Protecting Rodgers will be crucial through his final season with the team, and adding youth on cheap contracts will never hurt.
As Rodgers continues to play into his late-30’s, Green Bay needs to ensure the safety of their star quarterback. An addition such as Solomon Kindley along the interior of the offensive line would not only shore-up his pass protection, but will also add an invaluable presence in the running game. The combined backfield of Aaron Jones & Jamaal Williams has given the Packers a new source of offense outside of Rodgers and could be a new identity to work from.
Kindley is a 6-foot-4, 335-pound guard out of Georgia who has demonstrated NFL-ready footwork and hand placement. His stocky build gives him great leverage against his opponents and is able to anchor down well with his quick feet.
Georgia primarily used a zone running scheme that emphasizes mobility from all 5 of their offensive linemen. Kindley excelled at making his reach blocks on these runs and showed enough quickness to be used as a pulling guard at the next level.
Kindley would be a quality addition to the Green Bay interior line and could help make the Packers a running football team who won’t have to solely rely on the arm of Rodgers. Likely the top guard of the 2020 NFL draft, Kindley is a player who is hard to pass on when trying to shore-up an offensive front.
