2019 NFL Draft: First-round re-draft where Patriots and Steelers grab QBs
Original pick: T.J. Hockenson, Tight End, Iowa
Here we have what appears to be the first big miss of the 2019 NFL Draft. While we are just one year removed from the draft and tight end can be a position that takes a little time to develop, you can’t help but assume that the Detroit Lions had hoped to get a little more out of T.J. Hockenson this season.
Spending a top ten pick on a tight end in the NFL Draft is always a little eye-opening. While many thought that Hockenson was one of the most complete tight end prospects to enter the draft in quite some time, there are obviously a ton of talented players at different positions available at this point in the draft.
After an incredible week one performance of six catches for 131 yards and a touchdown, Hock totaled just 32 catches for 367 yards and two touchdowns on the year. So needless to say, after earning themselves a top-three pick in the 2020 NFL Draft with their year in 2019, the Lions are going to go in a different direction in this redraft.
Since former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia took over as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, the team has selected center Frank Ragnow and tight end T.J. Hockenson with their two first-round picks. Not exactly playing to the coach’s strengths if you ask me.
Here, the Lions opt for a raw but extremely talented and versatile defensive line prospect in Quinnen Williams. Williams had the top overall grade of any prospect by many draft evaluators and is still just 22-years-old.
An average rookie season, production-wise, causes Williams to drop down the draft board just a bit in this redraft, but his raw talent and ability still warrant a top-10 selection. Williams is a player that Patricia would love to bring in and work with. He has the ability to disrupt any play from nearly any positioning on the defensive line and would help a Lions defense that struggled mightily in 2019 against both the run and the pass.
