47. Tua Tagovailoa. player. QB. Alabama. 23. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

Current QB’s: Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler

The top quarterback slot on New England’s depth chart is open for the first time since Mo Lewis‘ hit Drew Bledsoe (“The Hit that Started a Dynasty”). Current residents Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler have not impressed during their time in the NFL, so New England will likely look outside the organization to fill the current void.

After suffering one of the worst injuries in college football this season, Tagovailoa has fallen down draft boards with concerns over his past durability. Such judgment is not unfair but has been disproven by players such as Rob Gronkowski in the past, but is something to always be wary of at all times.

Regardless of injury history, Tagovailoa showed himself to be a top-5 selection with both his tangible and intangible qualities during his tenure at Alabama. Smooth mechanics and developed veteran-like vision keep the ball in the hands of the offense and gave Alabama a steady source of offensive production. His best area of the field during his college years was always anywhere up to 15 yards in Saban’s offense, which has become a sweet spot for NFL offense’s with quick completions utilizing the athleticism of their receivers in space.

Within New England’s (projected based on past years) system, Tagovailoa would have the opportunity to continue to play behind a strong running game and a passing offense that builds from the play action. New England would likely bring in a bridge quarterback (according to many sources Andy Dalton) to hold down the fort during Tagovailoa’s recovery and adjustment to the NFL.
