Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton is a surprise top-five selection in Daniel Jeremiah’s first mock draft of the 2020 NFL Draft season.

When people like Daniel Jeremiah put together mock drafts, it’s definitely worth putting some stock and extra thought into. Jeremiah is as plugged in as any member of the media as a former NFL scout and personnel man, and he released his first mock draft of the 2020 NFL Draft season with a surprise player — Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton — in the top five picks.

The first three selections in the mock draft — Joe Burrow to the Bengals, Chase Young to the Redskins, and Jeffrey Okudah to the Lions — are about as you would expect them to be.

Then, the shocker.

Mekhi Becton to the New York Giants with the fourth overall pick.

For real?

This would be the shocker of the draft, no doubt. At least, if the draft were being held this weekend it would be. Now that DJ has put it out there, we might be able to see it coming.

He defended the pick on Twitter.

There’s no doubt that when you watch Becton play, he moves extremely well for his size and not even really just for his size — he just moves well period. Considering his mammoth size, his movement skills are all the more impressive.

When you consider the Giants’ need at offensive tackle in combination with the idea that general manager Dave Gettleman likes big dudes on both sides of the ball (see: Dexter Lawrence last year), maybe this pick makes sense.

Jeremiah also said during the live broadcast of day two of the 2020 Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL that he makes mock drafts using his ears — meaning he takes into consideration what he’s hearing from NFL teams — and he makes his top 50 lists with his eyes — meaning those are his own personal scouting thoughts.

I found this mock draft to be fascinating all-around and it featured more intriguing fits/picks, including four quarterbacks (Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love, Justin Herbert) in the top 14 picks.

Jerry Jeudy lasted to the 15th pick (Denver Broncos) in this mock.

LSU linebacker Patrick Queen went 19th to the Raiders.

TCU defensive lineman Ross Blacklock, Auburn defensive lineman Marlon Davidson, and Clemson cornerback AJ Terrell got some surprise late first-round love in this mock draft.

These are definitely intriguing nuggets to chew on and think about going forward.
