Ohio State. Jeffrey Okudah. 4. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 31. Cornerback

After not being selected by the Lions at three, Jeff Okudah does not fall far, coming off the board fourth in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Okudah has proven to be the best lockdown cornerback in this class and ends up being drafted fourth overall, just like his Buckeye teammate Denzel Ward in 2018.

The Giants defense, particularly their secondary, has struggled mightily in recent seasons. While it may make more sense to some to get some offensive line help for second-year quarterback Daniel Jones and former second overall running back Saquon Barkley, you won’t win many games if you can cover opposing receivers.

The Giants offense actually looked pretty good at times this past season, especially down the stretch once Barkley returned fully healthy. The defense struggled all season long. Cornerback is a spot that GM Dave Gettleman has clearly recognized and tried to address in recent years. They drafted DeAndre Baker last year and gave up a third-round pick to acquire Sam Beal in the supplemental draft in 2018, but neither has really come through as a shutdown corner.

Now after releasing Janoris Jenkins and letting him sign with the Saints, the need at corner is pretty glaring once again. While it would be nice to help the offensive line, Okudah is a guy that they can’t pass up. He has already shown signs of being a top-level corner at the next level. He would be an immediate upgrade and a guy that they can have shadow the opposition’s best receiver and hold his own. A type of guy that the Giants haven’t had in quite some time.
