2020 NFL Draft: Patriots find a QB of the future in two-round mock draft
Here it is. The pick we’ve all been waiting for. What will the Patriots do this offseason? They didn’t win a playoff game for the first time in what seems like a century, Tom Brady is not under contract for next season and Bill Belichick isn’t getting any younger. Just how much will change in New England is the storyline that many people will be paying close attention to all offseason long.
Although I must say I’m not seeing a perfect destination for Tom Bray to go to, I think that he will not be back with the Patriots next season. In that case, what will the Patriots do at quarterback? Will they try to get a guy like Tedy Bridgewater and try to keep their dominance ship afloat? Or will they “rebuild” in a sense and try to develop their next franchise quarterback?
Given the makeup of the current Patriots roster, I think they need to take a step back and think about whether they are really all in on the “win now” mentality. If Brady moves on I think they need to get younger and look towards the future. They can do that with Washington quarterback Jacob Eason.
Eason arguably has more raw talent than Tom Brady ever truly possessed. Brady is one of the greatest of all time, no doubt. But he did so by being smart and doing the little things right time after time. He never had a crazy strong arm or even average athletic ability. But he knew how to play and how to succeed.
Bill Belichick may love the opportunity to show that he can be nearly as successful with a brand new, young and talented quarterback. Eason has a ton of talent and could be molded into a top tier NFL quarterback. And there is no one better to take on that challenge than Bill Belichick.
Eason does a lot of things well. He has sound mechanics, fairly consistent accuracy, a very strong arm and good production as a starter for two top tier college programs. Like I mentioned with Herbert and Rivers, Eason would bring a jolt of youth and raw ability that the franchise hasn’t seen that in quite a while.
Eason is good enough to keep the Patriots competitive right away. And the Pats are in a division that would allow them to stay competitive while in their version of rebuilding. There are multiple spots on the roster that will need to be addressed before New England will truly be right there with Kansas City, Baltimore and the many talented teams in the NFC for the years to come. And if Tom Brady has something to prove elsewhere, a new quarterback would be a good place to start.
Michael Thomas is arguably the best receiver in football right now, and undoubtedly had the best season of any receiver in the league this season. But beyond him, what do the Saints really have at wide receiver? Not a whole lot.
Jalen Reagor is a real burner that could take the top off for an already dynamic New Orleans offense. Pairing Thomas with a young deep threat like Reagor could be great for the future of this offense. If defenses have to respect the threat of Reagor going deep that just means the fewer double teams Thomas will face.
After showing what he can do despite getting extra attention from the defenses on nearly every play, it’s scary to think what Thomas may be able to do if the Saints add even more respectable weapons.
