2020 Senior Bowl QB Preview: Big week for Justin Herbert, Jordan Love
Steven Montez, Colorado
Last, but not least, on the Senior Bowl quarterback preview is Colorado signal-caller Steven Montez. Like Patterson, Montez is the other developmental quarterback down in Mobile. In his final season at quarterback for the Buffaloes, Montez threw for just 2,808 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
When turning on the tape, it’s immediately evident that Montez has a strong arm. He makes throws down the field look effortless and the ball jumps out of his hand on shorter throws. Montez reminds this writer a bit (if we’re comparing Senior Bowl players from last season) of Tyree Jackson out of Buffalo. Like Jackson, Montez is a big, strong-armed quarterback.
The problem is that Montez works best when he has a clean pocket and doesn’t have to move around much. When he’s forced out of the pocket, his accuracy on the move drops off a cliff.
So what does Montez need to show scouts in Mobile to be considered draftable? He needs to show off the strong arm and prove he has enough accuracy to hit on deep balls and make smart decisions, as he too often tries to fit throws into too tight of windows. It would also be beneficial for him to show movement skills in the pocket, as he too often looks like a statue.
