Another Mike Leach coached quarterback is heading to the Senior Bowl. Gardner Minshew got the invitation in 2019, and Anthony Gordon heads to Mobile in 2020. In his first season as a starter in college, Gordon put up gaudy numbers (yes, of course, Leach’s offense gives him that chance). Gordon threw for 5,579 yards and 48 touchdowns while completing 71.6 percent of his passes.

Getting away from the numbers, there’s a good amount to like with Gordon’s game. He’s got a quick release and that plays well to the air raid scheme. Gordon worked through reads pretty well and had the patience for plays to develop down the field. He also made some tight-window throws during the year and has a great feel for touch passes down the field.

The main issues with Gordon are his footwork and his reckless nature. He threw 16 interceptions in 2019, many of which were of the gunslinger nature, where Gordon believes he can make any throw on the field. Regarding his footwork, Gordon has a tendency to be still in the pocket, which contributes to inaccurate, off-balanced throws when he sees an open man.

In Mobile, Gordon needs to be more refined in drills with his footwork, and show how well he can manage the two-minute drill. It will be interesting to see how his deep ball looks.
