2020 NFL Draft: First-round 2020 NFL mock draft with trades
You may think I am crazy. Yes, the Redskins just took Dwayne Haskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, however, there is a new coaching staff in town and they may want to secure the guy they want to run their offense. That guy could be Tua Tagovailoa. Chase Young is a great talent but securing a top prospect at the quarterback is way more beneficial to a team’s success. What happens to the former Ohio State quarterback? Stay tuned…
Well, this is a dream scenario for the Detroit Lions. They get arguably the best player in the 2020 NFL Draft without having to trade up to get him. Detroit is a potential trade-up selection for a team that wants to ensure they get Tua Tagovailoa, however, Washington selects the Alabama quarterback ahead of them. This scenario is even better for the Detroit Lions as they add a dynamic X-Factor to their defensive line that will have an instant impact.
Dave Gettleman is known for never trading down. Instead of trying to find a trade partner that wants to ensure they got a top quarterback prospect in Justin Herbert, the New York Giants select Isaiah Simmons. The versatile defender should only see his draft stock rise after his stellar National Championship game and should have an exceedingly successful combine.
We have our first trade in this mock 2020 NFL Draft. This could very well happen if Tua gets selected before Miami’s pick. The Dolphins might not want to invest high draft capital into Justin Herbert and instead finds a trade partner that is intrigued by the big, lively arm talent. This will allow Miami to accumulate more draft picks to add young talent to their roster.
It appears that Cam Newton may be out in Carolina and with a new coaching staff coming in, they may want to get them a young quarterback to build around and scheme for. With Joe Brady as the new offensive coordinator, the Carolina Panthers should find a way to scheme to Herbert’s strengths and find success.
This trade makes a lot of sense for both sides if Carolina likes the potential of Justin Herbert and Miami isn’t sold on him. The Dolphins would then have to find another way to fill their hole at quarterback.
With Justin Herbert off the board, there isn’t a quarterback worthy of the number six overall pick. This isn’t ideal, but if Phillip Rivers has another year in him, adding a plug-and-play offensive tackle in Andrew Thomas to protect him is just what they need if they want to have another Super Bowl run before Rivers retires. This roster is plenty talented enough to make the playoffs and potentially make a deep run in 2020.
With Miami trading back, they take the best player available here. Jeffrey Okudah projects as a man coverage specialist that will follow the opposing teams’ number one wide receiver. If Justin Herbert isn’t the quarterback that the Dolphins organization wants to invest in as the quarterback of the future, trading back with a team that does view him that way and taking a talented prospect at another premier position is the right decision.
Many people are plugging in wide receivers for the Arizona Cardinals with their first-round selection. The Cardinals announced on their Twitter that Larry Fitzgerald was returning for another season, so their wide receiving core is strong enough for the 2020 season. Selecting a difference-maker in their defensive front and waiting to take a wide receiver until later to get value at the deep class of receivers makes more sense for the Arizona Cardinals.
It seems like the Jacksonville Jaguars are forced to commit to one of Nick Foles or Gardner Minshew II as their quarterback of the future. For them to find success with them at quarterback, the Jaguars must ensure they have plenty of weapons that can elevate their game. DJ Chark stepped-up this season and solidified himself as a productive receiving target in the NFL. Outside of Leonard Fournette, those are the only threatening playmakers for defenses.
The Cleveland Browns must get a piece upfront. Since Joe Thomas‘ retirement, their left tackle position has been a glaring hole. In the 2020 NFL Draft, there are three tackle prospects worthy of a top ten selection and luckily for the Browns, at least one of those three should fall to the tenth pick and give Baker Mayfield the blind-side protection.
Jedrick Wills better projects as a left tackle in the NFL. This gives him the edge over Tristan Wirfs with this selection. Wills should step-in as a great pass protector for this potentially dynamic offense.
