2020 NFL Draft: 5 best team fits for Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb
By Ian Higgins
Quarterback: Sam Darnold
Receivers: Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder
After a plague of injuries on the defensive side of the ball, Sam Darnold was left to dry with little to no help against his ghosts. There is a lack of talent along the offensive line to protect Darnold, and his top receiver, Robby Anderson, seems to already be out the door to a contender. Losing a top target who has begun to come into his own like Anderson is a major loss for a struggling offense, and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
The Jets resident top receiver under contract is former Washington standout Jamison Crowder, who lacked the targets and scheme to find his footing in New York. If Crowder can find his place in the Jets offense though, he could become the perfect route-running compliment to a dynamic threat like Lamb. Darnold needs to continue to develop that trust throughout the offseason, and a player like Crowder can not be so underused again.
With a similar build and more refined skill set, Lamb could be used in a similar fashion to Anderson. New York already has the scheme in place to stretch the field vertically, but can also develop a portion of the playbook to create easy completions for Darnold and get Lamb with the ball into open space.
New York needs to replace a significant cog in their offensive machine, and Lamb would be a great fit into Adam Gase’s current offensive system. Similarly to Anderson, he will provide the vertical threat every offense needs to have as well as the ability after the catch to give Darnold confidence with easy completions for 5-10 yard gains.
The 2020 NFL draft has a handful of true game-breaking players who can bust a play wide open and take advantage in the open field. CeeDee Lamb is arguably one of the best candidates who fit into that unique role, and New York needs that explosiveness to become competitive within a now turbulent AFC East.
