53. Scouting Report. Tristan Wirfs. 10. Pick Analysis. Offensive Tackle. Iowa. player

The primary need for the Cleveland Browns to address this offseason is clear. Whether it is through the 2020 NFL Draft, free agency or both, the Browns desperately need to upgrade their offensive line. Both tackle positions and right guard are obvious weak spots on an otherwise extremely talented and well-rounded offense.

Lucky for Cleveland, there appear to be three clear-cut top tackle prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft. Picking 10th, with at least a couple quarterbacks and defensive studs likely picked ahead of them, the chances are pretty good that one of those three guys will be available to them.

In this particular scenario, the tackle that was remaining on the board for the Cleveland Browns at 10 was Iowa big man Tristan Wirfs. After other offensive tackles, Jedrick Wills of Alabama and Andrew Thomas of Georgia came off the board, it was a tough decision between Wirfs and defensive do-it-all at Clemson, Isaiah Simmons for the Browns at 10.

As great as Simmons is, the Browns absolutely need to address their offensive line, and a versatile guy like Wirfs could be the perfect fit for the Cleveland Browns this season.

While Greg Robinson had his ups and downs the past two seasons at left tackle for the Browns, the play on the right side of the offensive line was absolutely horrendous. Lucky for them, Wirfs has plenty of experience playing right tackle and a little at left tackle as well for the Hawkeyes.

If the Browns want to stick with Robinson for another year or they bring in a free agent left tackle while Wirfs develops at the next level, he would absolutely be a huge upgrade right away at right tackle. Then whenever they feel comfortable, the coaching staff can move Wirfs to the left side, where he would hopefully protect Baker Mayfield‘s blindside for years to come.

If they want to put him at left tackle right away, he could manage that too. While he does have some developing to do, particularly as a pass protector, Wirfs can hold his own at left tackle in the NFL and would surely benefit from learning his position of the future right from the start.

Wirfs is a powerful player with an imposing frame at 6-foot-5 and 322 lbs. He is a monster in the weight room and it shows on the field. He’s a force in the run game, manipulating defenders with ease to open holes for his runners. He is also very agile for such a big guy, able to get out in space or to the next level to make a bigger impact on the play.

As a pass protector, Wirfs is generally fundamentally sound. He has decent footwork for his size and his length and upper body strength help him greatly when facing the nation’s best edge rushers. While he could still improve his technique, especially in his hips, Wirfs has a ton of raw ability that can be molded into something great by good coaching.

All of this is assuming that Tristan Wirfs decides to forgo his senior season at Iowa and declare for the 2020 NFL Draft, something that he is expected to do but has not announced yet. If he does not enter the draft it would be a huge blow to the Cleveland Browns, lessening their chances of grabbing a much needed top offensive line prospect towards the top of the 2020 NFL Draft.
